HistoryThe College of Science was established in 1999. The departments that form the nucleus of the College used to belong to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). When the University was restructured, the curricular programs of the Department of Natural Sciences and the Department of Mathematics together with the TEHHEN Department were enough to warrant the separation from CAS. The Department of Natural Sciences was split into the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Physical Sciences. The TEHHEN Department became the Allied Sciences
The College of Science is already replete with history, considering its four departments trace their roots back as the formation of the University. For instance, the Mathematics Department and the Natural Sciences Department used to be together as one department. The two became separate only in 1992, when the Philippine Normal College was converted into a University. On the other hand, the Allied Sciences Department used to be the Home Economics Department. It was renamed TEHHEN Department and was realigned with the College of Arts and Social Sciences in 1992. In November 2002, the College of Science is placed under a verticalized structure on experimental basis. Under this structure, the college manages both undergraduate and graduate programs. In 2005, the Information and Technology Unit was transformed into Department of Information, Communication and Technology and offered the BSITE program. The various changes in the names and structures of the departments, and consequently, the college, go hand in hand with the changes in the educational goals and trends. The growth of the Philippine educational system resonates in the thrusts and focus of a teacher-training institution like PNU. Thus, the curricular offerings and specific courses offered by the college reflect these changes. Currently the COS is composed of five Departments: Allied Sciences, Biological Sciences, Information, Communication and Technology, Mathematics and Physical Sciences with the Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology, Extension and Research units. Its support units consist of the Science Resource Center, Learning Resource Center, Multimedia Center, Laboratory Services, DOST-RSTC and Department Based Organization. At present, the COS offers 16 Graduate and 18 Undergraduate curricular programs. |
